Rescue is a small, rural community in the heart of California’s gold country. Rescue may be small, and have a unique name, but it is also rich with history — and that history is what this 380-page, full-color book is all about! There are over 800 photographs and other graphics in this beautifully presented table-top book that capture the spirit of the past and help tell the story.

History of a Place Called Rescue is a snapshot in time, starting when gold was discovered in Coloma in 1848, to about the 1930s.

Your travel through the area starts with tours along prominent roads in Rescue. A large, full-color reference map, located in a pocket in the back of the book, pinpoints all of the featured historical sites.

There are chapters that detail the history of local schools, cemeteries, post offices, and mines. It tells the stories of the Pony Express and Lincoln Highway, both of which passed through Rescue. The largest chapter features the various families who moved here and stayed. The book is rich with pictures, family trees, and other graphics that bring Rescue’s history to life.
